Charity sector managers €œlowest industry earners€
Average total earnings for managers in the charity sector show them as the lowest ‘industry earners’ in a salary survey released this week.
The 2007 National Management Salary Survey show average earnings for managers across the UK and all sectors as £47,449. Charity sector managers come in at £37,456. London is still the area with the highest salaries with the lowest paid managers coming from Northern Ireland.
Bonus payments have taken a tumble as well, with just over a third of executives in the charity sector receiving bonuses in 2007, compared with 66.5 per cent the previous year.

Charities appear to be no different from the rest of the world and difficulties in recruiting staff are put down to a lack of qualified candidates by almost three quarters of respondents. Other reasons were competition from other organisations and employers admitting they had offered little in the way of training or career development, leading to more than 75 per cent saying they have problems retaining staff.
Resignation rates in the sector have also increased from 2.6 per cent to 5.2 per cent.
Director of marketing and corporate affairs at the Chartered Management Institute Jo Causon said: The steep climb in organisations reporting recruitment difficulties, mixed with an increasing number of resignations should be ringing alarm bells for employers. The marketplace is clearly tipping in favour of the employee, so if they are serious about retaining the best talent, organisations urgently need to meet the needs ane expectations of their staff.
However, Sarah Illingwoth, director of Prime Executive, the executive search and selection arm of Charity People, said she felt that the size of the marketplace had not grown markedly and that these figures did not necessarily reflect the situation in fundraising, but in the wider charity sector as a whole.
The survey does not differentiate between different areas of the sector.
